Welcome...

Welcome to my Solodark campaign, played using the Shadowdark and Solodark rules. Each chapter will use a different adventure/setting/module created by the talented first- and third-party creators of Shadowdark. When using this content, I will always credit the creators.

Let's start with building and rolling up some characters.

Shadowdark is incredibly lethal, so I’m going to do a few things:

  • I’m going to roll stats as prompted, but I won’t randomize anything else.  I’m going to try to build a decent party to survive in this game.
  • I usually like to flesh out backstories, but I don’t want to get overly attached to anyone yet.  Who knows who will live and who will die.
  • I’m going to roll a party of five.  I find that to be the ideal size.

Lastly, all character models were made using Hero Forge. With that in mind, let’s start building

Character One

Okay, let’s roll some stats:

Stat Block

STR 12 (+1)

DEX 15 (+2)

CON 14 (+2)

INT 11 (+0)

WIS 7 (-2)

CHA 10 (+0)

This looks like a thief here, someone who is dextrous and clever.  This could be a good up-close-and personal thief.

Ancestry: Halfling

I’m going to go Halfling.  Their “Stealthy” trait is really good for thieves.

Background: Wanted

Going back to the Background.  I’m going to have them be “Wanted” because I think that could be a fun interlude if I need help with an adventure.

Class: Thief

I already talked about how I think the DEX score makes for a good thief.

Class Talent: +2 to Strength, Dexterity, or Charisma stat

I had to roll for this one, but it’s not bad.  I would like a little more Charisma, but in the end, the extra DEX help could be really nice.  That’s what we’ll go with.

Hit Points: 6 HP

Rolled 4 on 1d4, CON mod +2 = 6 HP

Whew, nice roll.  They may hold up in a fight.

Gold rolled: 15 gp

God, what a terrible roll.  I really wanted to armor to stay alive, so I ended up buying a shit-ton of knives.  That can give us range and close attacks.

Name: Jezebel Brambletoe

Alignment: Chaotic

Deity: Memnon (Chaotic) of the Dark Trio

This little halfling has to be an agent of Chaos, thus sworn to the rightful god of Chaos.

Character Two

Stat Block

STR 8 (-1)

DEX 7 (-2)

CON 15 (+2)

INT 7 (-2)

WIS 12 (+1)

CHA 14 (+2)

Okay…this is a tough one.  They are not going to be good in traditional combat.  I’m rolling these in shadowdarkling.net, which makes suggestions for classes, the suggestion here is a Seer or Witch.  I like a Witch, I think they have more useful spells.

Ancestry: Kobold

The +1 to spell casting is important since this will be primarily a spell-caster.

Background: Urchin

I accidentally rolled this, but I like it a lot.

Class: Witch

Class Option: Spells

Willowman

Tier: 1, Range: Near, Duration: Instant. You call upon the Willowman to appear in one creature's mind, filling it with supernatural terror. Choose one creature of LV 2 or less within range. That creature must immediately make a morale check. Even creatures that are not normally subject to morale checks (such as undead) must do so.

Eyebite

Tier: 1, Range: Near, Duration: Instant. One creature you target takes 1d4 damage, and it can't see you until the end of its next turn.

Charm Person

Tier: 1, Range: Near, Duration: 1d8 days. You magically beguile one humanoid of level 2 or less within near range, who regards you as a friend for the duration. The spell ends if you or your allies do anything to hurt it that it notices. The target knows you magically enchanted it after the spell ends.

Trying to go for things that can be cast a range.

Class Talent: Gain Advantage on Spell

I took advantage on “Willoman.”  Spells that can immediately take out an enemy are so valuable.

Hit Points: 3 HP

Rolled 1 on 1d4, CON mod +2 = 3 HP

OMG.  So squishy.  Please always stay back.

Gold rolled: 30 gp

Welp, she could share some gold with Jezebel.

Name: Tinder Brazlek

Alignment: Chaotic

Deity: Shune the Vile (Chaotic) of the Dark Trio

We are creating one chaotic party.

Character Three

Stat Block
STR 13 (+1)
DEX 10 (+0)
CON 10 (+0)
INT 10 (+0)
WIS 16 (+3)
CHA 12 (+1)

Whoo!  We needed a Priest!

Ancestry: Dwarf

We need someone a little more stout.

Background: Scholar

Another random one that fits.

Class: Priest

Priestly Language: Fey

Gonna be a weird dynamic with the Shune-worshipping witch

Class Option: Spells

Cure Wounds

Shield of Faith

We need them to heal, and (more importantly) they must be alive to heal.

Class Talent: +1 to priest spellcasting checks

Hit Points: 3 HP

Stout: +2 HP, Stout: roll hit points with advantage (rolled 1 and 1 on 2d6) = 1, CON mod +0 = 3 HP

Of all the fucking luck…

Gold rolled: 45 gp

Trying everything to keep this little Priest alive….

Name: Thrum Thurgood

Alignment: Neutral

Deity: Gede (Neutral) of the Four Lords

Lawful feels like it would be at odds with the rest of the party.

Character Four

Stat Block
STR 13 (+1)
DEX 9 (-1)
CON 15 (+2)
INT 12 (+1)
WIS 14 (+2)
CHA 7 (-2)

Sure….we can make a tank out of that.

Ancestry: Half-Orc

This will help him get a boost for melee combat

Background: Barbarian

This could be fun!  I like the idea of Orc Vikings!

Class: Sea Wolf

The shield wall ability could save this guy’s life.

Class Talent: Duality; choose two different Old Gods effects each day

This will be exclusively Odin and Freya, which should both be good.

Hit Points: 6 HP

Rolled 4 on 1d8, CON mod +2 = 6 HP

Okay…that’s not…awful

Gold rolled: 35 gp

He’s tank-ish.  This dude’s gonna die…

Name: Zahkrash Hoffnor

Haha!  ORC VIKINGS!

Alignment: Chaotic

Gotta fit in…

Deity: All Nord Gods (Lawful, Chaotic, Neutral) of the Nord Pantheon

Works with the duality thing

Character Five

Okay, this is just a bonus now.

Stat Block
STR 15 (+2)
DEX 14 (+2)
CON 13 (+1)
INT 12 (+1)
WIS 8 (-1)
CHA 11 (+0)

Oh, wow.  This guy is good.

Ancestry: Elf

I just don’t want any humans in the party.  It’s that simple.

Background: Mercenary

A dark brooding elf.

Class: Fighter

Class Options

Weapon Mastery: Longsword

Grit: Dexterity

Class Talent: +1 to melee and ranged attacks

My guy is an absolute unit.

Hit Points: 8 HP

Rolled 7 on 1d8, CON mod +1 = 8 HP

OMG.  Let’s fucking go.

Gold rolled: 25 gp

They don’t need to eat. They only need to kill.

Name: Caran Ranes

Alignment: Neutral

No lawful mother fuckers in this party.

Deity: Ord (Neutral) of the Four Lords

Love. This.  Dude.
